YAMAGASHIRA Noriyuki
Photographer from Nagasaki, Japan
While studying veterinary medicine at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, I started taking pictures during trips to Asian countries. Right after September 11 attacks in 2001, I took pictures of Afghans engulfed in the turmoil of war, which won the 8th Domon Ken Culture Award, one of Japan’s major photographic awards. In 2003, I visited Iraq for shooting coverage, which was later published as a newspaper serial entitled “Baghdad Report.” Since 2011, Chinese people living in old residential areas surrounded by skyscrapers in Shanghai had caught my eyes, and I visited there several times to shoot their daily lives. While in Japan, an old married-couple living in an abandoned island of Daikokujima, Hokkaido, drew my attention. In 2006, I moved to Nagasaki, and since then, a lot of pictures of people and natural landscapes in the city I took have appeared on local newspapers or magazines. I have also been an official photographer of V-Varen Nagasaki Football Club, a member of J-League, Japanese professional football league.
